This coloured engraving is of a hurdle race at Brighton Racecourse in 1833. It shows the horses and riders arriving for the start of what would have been a unique event at what is usually a flat racing only racecourse. Racing is still held at Brighton Racecourse today.

Charles Hunt Snr was the patriarch of a family of artists/engravers which flourished in the 19th century. They were based in London and in latter years had a studio in Surrey. They were the leading painters of racing subjects of their day and covered all the big races, visiting the great racecourses of Epsom, Royal Ascot, Aintree, Newmarket and Goodwood.
